The Basics
What Is Flux 3?
Black Forest Labs is the research team — founded by former Stable Diffusion creators — behind the Flux model family, one of the most widely adopted architectures in AI image generation. Flux 3 is their newest release, improving on Flux 2 in three ways: sharper prompt adherence, faster generation, and more realistic output across skin, lighting, and texture. In-image text rendering is also noticeably more reliable. Flux 3 matters beyond Black Forest Labs' own tools. It's the architecture behind ComfyUI workflows, and — through xAI's Aurora implementation — the foundation Grok Imagine runs on. When Flux improves, everything built on top of it improves too.

Flux 3 closes most of the remaining gap with Midjourney on photorealism — skin texture, lighting, and multi-subject scenes hold up at a level DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion 3 don't quite match. Midjourney still leads on stylized, painterly output, but for photorealistic and product-style images, Flux 3 is now the strongest open-architecture option available.
Text Rendering: Fewer Garbled Words, Cleaner Signage
Flux 3 renders in-image text — signs, labels, posters, UI mockups — with far fewer garbled characters than Flux 2 or Stable Diffusion 3 produced. It's not flawless, but it's now reliable enough for short phrases and logos without multiple regenerations.
Generation Speed: Flux 3 Dev vs Flux 3 Pro
Flux 3 Dev is built for local, open-source use and prioritizes flexibility over raw speed. Flux 3 Pro trades some of that flexibility for significantly faster generation, making it the better fit for workflows where turnaround time matters more than local control.
